GENERAL NAVIGATION TIPS

These tips might make working and playing on the net more fun.

1 - Use a modern browser with it's plug-ins also updated. Nowadays browsers are very efficient at updating plug-ins and they usually open a window asking if we want to install the programme in order to view the associated content. You will thus avoid bugs (programming errors) and will be able to enjoy the latest technology on the web.

2 - If you have a slow connection and don't need to view images, setup your browser not to display graphics and other multimedia content, with graphics and audio disabled. These are the ones that take up most of the download time. You can always view the graphics by changing the settings back or by right clicking on an image and selecting Show Image. The settings for this are usually found in:

Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - Multimedia (by clicking on the boxes you select/deselect the options).

3 - Use the Stop button if a page is taking a long time to load all the graphics. As soon as the text appears you can hit the stop button. The downloaded files will be visible and all links will be available to you. If you wish to carry on downloading the page hit refresh.

4 - Use the Bookmarks/Favorites since they are very handy. Look them up in the Help section for guidance.

5 - Use the Edit - Find (on This Page) to find a word or phrase within a page. A document might have thousands of lines or more!

6 - Browse at off-peak hours.

7 - Choose your own start/home page.

8 - Learn how to use at least two search engines since one might be limited for some searches.

9 - You can open a second (and third etc.) browser window while you are downloading a page on the web.

Explorer: File - New - Window (Ctrl + N)

10 - Check out the FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions. These are usually the questions we've ALL had at some point so it is useful to see them if a question comes up.

11 - ¡IMPORTANT!
Look away from the monitor whenever you can. For example, while a download is taking place, or a large e-mail is being sent or received etc. In this way you will rest your eyes and mind. Don't spend hours sitting without moving. Go have a drink or just look out the window! Use glasses and/or a screen filter to protect your eyesight.

13 - If you are downloading a large file off the net, disable your screen saver since it could interfere when it starts.

14 - Sometimes a link will take us to a long URL and this will give us an error message like "Error 404; File Not Found". This might not mean the page isn't available, but it might simply not be at that address anymore, or the link was wrong. Try erasing all that follows from the three letter extension, if you wish, one directory at a time, and with any luck you will land at the home page of the site you are looking for. From there you can search and arrive at your original destination.
