PLUG-INSPlug-Ins are applications that expand the main applications, like the browser, and add multimedia capability or other functionality. They 'connect' to an application and run as part of it. They are used when you browse to a site that requires that plug-in for displaying all the multimedia elements contained in that site. They are activated automatically. If you enter a website and do not have the necessary plug-in installed in order to view the page, the browser will let you know about this, and generally will provide the possibility to download it from the internet. If you accept to download it, after it is installed you will be able to continue on the site and view whatever was previously not available. Many companies are developing plug-ins for the different browsers and website programmers are using the new possibilities available. Most plug-ins are essentially visualizers for different types of graphics, video and audio. There are also plug-ins that allow for the visualization of 3D, provide commercial capability, allow for remote controlling of other computers, etc... Nowadays there are thousands of plug-ins available for the different browsers. The main inconvienient about plug-ins was having to download and install them, but nowadays that is usually automated after you accept to install it.
